Macaron vs Cline
Cline is an open-source coding agent that lives in your editor, with an approval switch for each kind of action and checkpoints after every step. Macaron is a desktop app that runs Claude Code and Codex, with undo for each turn, your checks before and after, and isolated computers.

Short answer. Pick Cline if you want the agent inside VS Code or another editor, fine control over what it may do without asking, and checkpoints that can roll back the conversation too. Pick Macaron if you want Claude Code and Codex as they are, on a machine that can't touch your files, with your own checks run around every change.

How each works day to day
Cline
You open the Cline panel in your editor, describe a task, and in Plan mode it reads and proposes without touching anything. Switch to Act and it edits files, runs commands and uses tools, asking for approval unless you've switched on auto-approve for that kind of action. After each step it saves a checkpoint you can compare or restore.
Macaron
You open a project in a folder on your Mac or on a Computer, start Claude Code, Codex or Macaron's own agent, and chat in a window. Each turn ends in a card listing the files changed, with an undo button. Your checks run before and after, Review shows the diff, and a second model can review the change.
Where code runs and what it can touch
Cline's docs say it processes everything locally: the agent works in your editor, on your machine, with the approvals you set. Its desktop app can connect over SSH so the agent and your code live on another machine, and its Kanban board gives each task its own git worktree.
Macaron's Computers are Linux machines with no access to your Mac's files, keys or Docker socket. A sandbox copy of a folder works there, and Apply to Mac writes the result back only if it applies cleanly.
Undo and checkpoints
Both keep your branch history clean. Cline saves a checkpoint to a shadow git repository after each tool use, and you can restore the files, roll the conversation back to that point, or both. Macaron saves one checkpoint per agent turn, and undoing a turn restores the files from before it, refusing if a later edit would conflict.

Who should pick which
- You want the agent inside VS Code, Cursor or JetBrains, next to your code: Cline.
- You want a separate switch for each kind of action an agent may take on its own: Cline.
- Your company needs SSO, roles and an MCP allowlist for its developers: Cline Enterprise.
- You want Claude Code or Codex themselves, with your own subscription: Macaron.
- You don't want the agent running on your Mac at all: Macaron, with a sandbox copy and Apply to Mac.
- You want your tests run before and after every change: Macaron.
Using both
Both work on an ordinary git repository, and neither changes your branch history to keep its checkpoints. You can keep Cline in your editor for small edits and use Macaron for longer agent runs on an isolated computer.
What Macaron doesn't do
No Slack integration, no mobile app, no hosted SLA, no multiplayer, and no visual browser testing of its own beyond the AI end-to-end tests. It also doesn't run inside VS Code or JetBrains, and has no SDK for embedding its agent.
Questions
Is Cline free?+
The open-source extension and CLI are free under Apache-2.0. You pay for inference, at cost through Cline or on your own keys. ClinePass and Enterprise are paid.
Can Cline use my Claude subscription?+
Yes. Cline's docs describe a Claude Code mode that uses a Claude Pro or Max subscription through the Claude CLI, and sign-in with an OpenAI subscription for Codex.
Does Cline run in a sandbox?+
Cline's docs describe it running locally with the approvals you set, and on a remote machine over SSH from its desktop app. We didn't find a built-in container. Macaron's Computers are isolated Linux machines.
Which is better for teams?+
Cline, today: it offers SSO, roles and admin controls on Enterprise. Macaron is single user.
